My son Liam came in again and did a bang-up job on “Dad's Old Records”. I describe this song as a funky, folky tribute to the music I listened to and was influenced by when I was a kid. Originally, all the songs and artists I listened to were on my dad's collection of then-new 78 records. These included mostly Johnny Cash, but with a smattering of other artists like Johnny Horton and Buddy Holly. Our copy of Peggy Sue by Buddy had a crack down the middle, but somehow it held together and I managed to play the record.
On the recording session, Liam was able to sing everything that was thrown at him by engineer John Thiel and I. It's so great having him sing harmonies because on one hand our voices are similar (family voices, y'know!), yet he sings differently than I do. I love it! He does a special oo-ooh part in the middle and near the end of the song that is so him. I am totally blessed! Listen for it!
After adding the “grungelizer” to make it sound like a 78 RPM record, and dirtying up the lead guitar a bit, we called “Dad's Old Records” finished, for now. I uploaded it onto Soundcloud, so you will be able to hear what the song sounds like.
Next, I started a new track: I Will Love You More, written by Jim Schaming (Toronto), Christie Simmons and myself. At this stage there are two doubled acoustic guitars and a lead vocal. Good for now!
